Thyroxine-Binding Globulin (TBG) is the major thyroid hormone transport protein in serum. It is expressed by the liver and secreted in plasma. Determination of TBG levels is particularly useful for cases in which total thyroid hormone levels do not correlate with the thyro-metabolic status, such as with pregnancy, the use of contraceptive steroids, or in patients with hereditary excesses or deficiencies of TBG.
