Serum Amyloid P-Component
Serum Amyloid P-Component (SAP) is a small glycoprotein found in normal serum and in all amyloid deposits. It acts as an acute phase protein, modulates immunologic responses, inhibits elastase, and has been suggested as an indicator of liver disease or neurological disorders such as Alzheimer?s. SAP is a precursor of amyloid component P which is found in basement membrane and associated with amyloid deposits. It is a homopentamer with a discoid arrangement of five non-covalently bound subunits.
