Procollagen type III N-terminal peptide

Procollagen type III N-terminal peptide

PIIINP is a protein composed of three identical peptide chains and is encoded by the COL3A1 gene. Type III collagen is found as a major structural component in hollow organs such as large blood vessels, uterus and bowel and plays an important role in blood clotting. During collagen synthesis in soft tissue, N-terminal procollagen (P3NP) is cleaved off and released into circulation, allowing this biomarker to be measured without having to take a tissue biopsy.
