Macrophage Migration Inhibitory Factor (MIF) is a nonglycosylated polypeptide expressed by several cells of the immune system. It is also expressed in the epithelial linings of the lung, skin, and gastrointestinal tract, as well as the adrenal and pituitary glands. MIF levels are known to increase in patients with sepsis or septic shock. MIF is a key cytokine in inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and atherosclerosis.
