Glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B
Glycoprotein non-metastatic melanoma protein B (GPNMB) is a transmembrane glycoprotein implicated in cell differentiation, inflammation, tissue regeneration, and tumor progression. It is a potent inducer of immunosuppression in cancer by contributing to the adhesion of melanocytes with keratinocytes. It shows expression in the lowly metastatic human melanoma cell lines and xenografts but does not show expression in the highly metastatic cell lines. GPNMB may be involved in growth delay and reduction of metastatic potential. Among its related pathways is signaling by non-receptor tyrosine kinases, such as PTK6. GPNMB is associated with diseases such as primary localized cutaneous amyloidosis, lichen amyloidosis, cerebral adrenoleukodystrophy, Alzheimers disease, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, oral squamous cell carcinoma, with possible associations with ovarian cancer and Parkinsons disease. This assay detects both the soluble and membrane-bound forms of GPNMB.
