Growth Differentiation Factor 11 (GDF11), also known as BMP11, is a member of the TGF? superfamily and shares 90% sequence homology to myostatin (GDF8). GDF11 gene expression and protein abundance decreases with age. GDF11 is a myostatin-homologous protein that acts as an inhibitor of nerve tissue growth. The systemic administration of recombinant GDF11 can reverse age-related cardiac hypertrophy.
