Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein

Cartilage Oligomeric Matrix Protein

Cartilage oligomeric matrix protein (COMP) is 110kDa glycoprotein and is a member of the thrombospondin family of extracellular proteins. COMP is a potent suppressor of apoptosis in chondrocytes. COMP is not only cartilage-derived but was found widely in other tissues, including synovium and tendon. COMP is upregulated in rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis, hepatocellular carcinomas, chronic pancreatitis, and pancreatic carcinomas. COMP levels correlate with cartilage degradation and it is a potential prognostic marker in inflammatory joint diseases.
