Calprotectin

Calprotectin (MRP8/14, S100A8/S100A9, Calgranulin) is a heterodimer of MRP14 (14 kDa heavy chain) and MRP8 (8 kDa light chain). It is a calcium and zinc binding protein belonging to the S100 family. Elevated levels are observed during inflammatory responses, suggesting its role as a regulatory protein during inflammation. Expression is also upregulated in some diseases where inflammation is triggered, such as rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn?s disease, viral/microbial infections, and some cancers.
