Complement C3 (C3) functions as an immune system protein that is involved in the activation of the complement system. Quantitation of C3 is used to detect an inborn deficiency of this factor or immunologic diseases in which C3 is consumed at an increased rate. These include lupus erythematosus, chronic active hepatitis, certain chronic infections, post-streptococcal and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis, and others.
