Angiopoietin-2 (ANG-2) is a secreted protein growth factor that promotes angiogenesis. It binds to the receptor tyrosine kinase Tie-2 that is expressed on endothelial cells, and it is important in maintaining the integrity of adult blood vessels. Its antagonistic effect may be limited to cell receptors that occur within the vasculature. ANG-2 may therefore play a role in down-regulation of blood vessel branching and sprouting.
