Angiopoietin-1 (ANG-1) plays a critical role in embryogenic angiogenesis and in maintaining the integrity of adult vasculature. Human ANG-1 has 97% homology with mouse ANG-1. It activates TIE-2 signaling on endothelial cells to promote chemotaxis, cell survival, cell sprouting, vessel growth and stabilization. ANG-1 may also play a role in the early development of the heart.
